Under Pelley, ‘CBS Evening News’ Sees Better Ratings

When Scott Pelley took over the CBS EVENING NEWS from Katie Couric in June, 2011, he had his work cut out for him: despite the fact that it did well here in the Lowcountry, the show had been a distant third place for years nationally with lots of effort put into turning that around, but with far too little success.

The CBS EVENING NEWS is the only network evening news broadcast to se year-to-year ratings increases in what is known as the “key demo,” in this case, Adults 25-54. That age group is referred to as the “key demo” in the network news audience because that’s the one advertisers are most interested in attracting.

The program is now the closest it has been to second place ABC in Adults 25-54 in 18 years with a gap of only one-tenth of a ratings point.

With Pelley at the helm, the broadcast added nearly a half-million viewers this season, the biggest increase for CBS’s nightly newscast in 15 years and the biggest increase for any network evening news broadcast in 11 years. And it’s the only network evening news broadcast to post viewer gains over the last two seasons.
The CBS EVENING NEWS airs weeknights at 6:30pm, immediately following LIVE 5 NEWS AT 6, on Live 5 WCSC.
