Actor Makes Appearance on Soap 26 Years After Death

A soap opera character received a real-life message from the grave about the dangers of smoking on Thursday’s episode of CBS’s THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL.

A scene between the characters of Nick and Jackie, played by Jack Wagner and Leslie-Anne Down, includes an online video of a public service announcement featuring the late Yul Brynner, famous for his Oscar-winning role in The King and I.

The spot was edited from an interview Brynner gave after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.  During the interview, he said he wanted to make an anti-smoking commercial.

The American Cancer Society played the spot on the air after Brynner’s death in October of 1985, at the actor’s request.

Brynner says, in part:

“Now that I’m gone, I tell you, don’t smoke. Whatever you do, just don’t smoke. If I could take back that smoking, we wouldn’t be talking about any cancer. I’m convinced of that.”

In the soap’s storyline, Nick is fighting an addiction to cigars after a cancer scare.

You can see the spot as it originally aired on YouTube, here. It’s an eerie reminder of the dangers of smoking, but only time will tell if it actually motivates the soap character to snuff out the stoagies.
